Adobe Business Catalyst was completely discontinued and shut down by Adobe on March 26, 2021.
Because the service is no longer operational, you cannot create new Business Catalyst sites or connect them to Dreamweaver anymore. However, if you are studying historical web workflows or working with archived local systems, here is how the connection easily worked during its peak utility. Historical Connection Methods
For versions of Dreamweaver that supported it (primarily Creative Cloud 2014 and earlier), developers used two primary methods to bridge the platforms:
The Built-In Extension: You downloaded the official Business Catalyst add-on from the Adobe Creative Cloud Add-Ons marketplace. Once file sync was active and the extension was installed, you simply opened Dreamweaver, navigated to Window > Business Catalyst, and logged in with your Adobe ID to download site assets.
Direct FTP/SFTP Server Connection: If using Dreamweaver 2015 or later (where the official extension was removed), you connected manually. You went to Site > New Site, selected the Servers tab, and entered the specific FTP login credentials provided directly in your Business Catalyst site dashboard backend. Essential Legacy Requirements
To establish a successful connection back when the platform was live, the environment required precise parameters:
Version Check: The extension was strictly compatible up to Dreamweaver CC 2014. It did not function on CC 2015 or subsequent updates.
File Sync Active: Before installation, the Creative Cloud desktop app required its native file synchronization features to be fully enabled.
App Status: Dreamweaver had to be entirely shut down during the extension installation process to allow the panel to load correctly. Modern Alternatives
If you are looking to build or manage an all-in-one online business today without heavy back-end coding, modern alternatives have replaced the old Dreamweaver/Business Catalyst workflow:
Shopify: Best for migrating old Business Catalyst eCommerce structures and managing customer databases.
WordPress + Elementor: Provides the visual, drag-and-drop design control of Dreamweaver paired with robust content management.
Webflow: The closest modern spiritual successor to the Dreamweaver style, offering visual CSS design tools that output clean, production-ready code.
If you are trying to migrate old code or want to find a modern tool that fits your current web design skill level, let me know what you are building and I can guide you to the right setup!
