A crooked horizon or tilted building can quickly ruin an otherwise perfect shot. The Straighten Tool is an essential feature found across most modern image editors to correct misaligned compositions.
The tool operates on a simple principle: you manually draw a guide line over an element that should be perfectly horizontal or vertical. The software then automatically rotates the canvas to match that reference line. Method 1: Using Adobe Photoshop
Photoshop offers a couple of highly precise ways to straighten your canvas. The Crop Tool Method Press C to activate the Crop Tool.
Click the Straighten icon (which looks like a level) in the top options bar.
Click and drag a line along your crooked horizon or vertical edge. Release the mouse button; the image rotates automatically.
Turn on Content-Aware Fill or Generative Expand in the top bar to automatically fill in empty corner pixels created by the rotation. Press Enter to commit the changes. The Ruler Tool Method Select the Ruler Tool nested under the Eyedropper tool.
Drag a line across the tilted reference asset in your photo.
Navigate to the top menu and select Image > Image Rotation > Arbitrary.
Click OK on the pre-calculated angle to straighten your canvas. Method 2: Using Adobe Lightroom
Lightroom integrates this functionality directly into its cropping workflows. Press R to open the Crop & Straighten panel. Click on the Straighten Tool icon next to the Angle slider.
Click and drag your cursor over the tilted line in the image.
Alternatively, click the Auto button next to the slider to let Lightroom automatically resolve the tilt. Method 3: Mobile Devices (iOS & Android)
